have the ATI Radeon 9200, I had the same problem with the game, after it loaded my sreen went blank. Drove me nuts. I tried everything short of replacing the card. I recently had downloaded the latest driver from ATI for the Raedeon series and thought as a last resort to use the driver that came with the install CD opposed to the upgrade.

With the default driver it works great with no lag. Not saying it was a conflict in the upgraded driver but haven't had a problem yet with the driver that the card came with.

I found this in the Novaworld forum. It worked for me too. It's worth a try.
