I like to put on my MP3 player (with earbuds) while its running one of my favorite podcasts at a really low volume. It can't be a new one that I haven't yet heard, though, or I'll end up actually paying attention, I just need something familiar and entertaining so that my mind stays in an "oh, yeah, I like this" loop, instead of wandering around my brain's basement, smashing open crates, digging up bodies, and complaining about the mess. I mean, look at the state of it...
I've tried this with music (the song "Echoes" from Pink Floyd, specifically), but music does not sooth my mind. I tend to start paying attention to it, with insomnial concentration, it's just not good.
But hearing (NOT listening to) Chris Hardwick talking to Maria Bamford in Nerdist 289 for the umpteenth time... or maybe The Bugle, or Walking the Room... it's like a security blanket for my ears. Covers the slight tinnitus I have, too.
