i think the same thing has happened to a lot of people. it did happen to me but it only lasted for a day at a time then it stopped doing it!?
it always happened after a clean install of windows, it would be fine until i update windows, then it would crash rather than freeze as you said. but still at the same point you said.
i don't know what the fix is though :/
