Assuming you have Windows7, it's default trouble shoot compatibility mode settings are to (XP service pack 2)
I'll have to install the game again to check but I think manually setting(XP service pack 2) or (Windows 98) compatibility with desktop composition turned off was the fix, try it for now and I'll get back to you on it.
Have a look in ghw.txt it may have logged some info there.
