u using an Upgrade version to install? because every other version of XP will install straight from the CD.
if it's an upgrade cd, running the installer from a DOS prompt won't make a difference, because it will still probably want proof that you are upgrading from a previous version.
you should just be able to type D -> enter -> SETUP
(where D is your cd drive)
