I went poking around redhat.com just a few minutes ago and found it to be sad.. Red hat used to be free, or at least cheap, but now they are charging almost as much as windows.. $299 for Standard Edition Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (Which is basically Red hat desktop).. in fact I can pick up a copy of Windows XP PRO /w SP2 at newegg.com for 1/2 that price...
How do they claim it's cheaper to manage? People have to learn Linux, or hire someone to teach them how to use it. Then they have to teach employees how to use it. Time = money.. And after everyone knows how to use it, Red Hat makes you pay a subscription to get updates... Then you have to find decent software to run on it..
Sad.. I almost don't see a point to migrating to Linux now. I don't hate Linux, and I don't hate windows. But if there both the same price then why go to Linux when everything works with windows? BTW I'm only really talking about Red Hat & Novell that charge a lot for Linux + have subscriptions.
