hmmmmm fist thing i think is that if that is just a regular ethernet cable that's where your problem lies....if you don't have a router or hub/switch then you need to be using a crossover cable. this is what could be causing the problems with your home network as the two computers are fighting over the IP addresses and control of the internet connection. from your post that is most likely what is happening.
Best Buy or any local computer shop or even Radio Shack should carry corssover cables and they aren't that expensive either.
