have strip of wood on the wall so it support the book case [1" wide x 1/2" thick x what ever the length be] running side by side [not up and down]. this way if there no beam to screw into you have the strip to screw into for support of the wight of the book case. i put shelf up around the wall near my Computer work station area. i even have 2 crossing the windows.

if this is your first time doing this take the strips space them about 12" to 18" apart and use scew's not nails in the wall. don't use drywall to mount it to, mount strips to wooden beams for a solid support. drywall or panel walls book case may fall down.
