Are you using XP?
If so try uninstalling and reinstalling DF after making sure you have latest drivers for all your hardware.
Then set DF to run in win98 mode by right clicking the icon you use to start it and clicking the compatibility tab.
I get shut down and sysdump on occasion whilst I am switching between menus within DFLW but I have only ever had this since upgrading to XP.
Im quite lucky in that it never does it in-game but I have spent a fair bit of time getting the system I am running it on just right.
