Read alot of Voltaires work (translated), brilliant.
Alot of very good philosphes/writters appeard around that time of the Enlightenment Rousseau, Montesquieu and to a lesser degree Hobbes and Locke. It was these people that came up with the idea of government as a social contract, the Seperation of Powers.
The French have done alot for this world, far more than they are given credit for.
