What is art in a Sig?

The term ripping has come up in many of the forums lately..
I assme this is the use of someone elses graphics in thier Sigs. Why is this wrong? I can understand taking a straight image and claiming it for your own..But Images from movies and TV and magazines and such are very useful in the creation of a cool sig..Its not like anyone is making money from this its all in fun..If you are making money there are Copyright issues I see coming up. Manipulation of an existing image is still art, as much as a bunch of lines and tentecles and blinking dots...Andy Warhol tinted a cambells Soup can green and a Picture of Marylin Monroe and it was called art. I think it takes as much skill to Manipulate a boring frame from a movie or a Sreen Shot as it does to make a Tentacle or a blinking dot or graph lines..Just my 2 cents worth..

the image was not just a complete rip. it was cut up and duplicated, blended, animation was added along with a few other touches.

So what is legal and what is not...?

if someone makes something it is their property, claiming you made it yourself if you didnt', would be 'illegal'.

legal and illegal are far too strong words to use when involved with small time gfx like sigs here at a gaming website. no money changes hands so there are no real prosicutable hard-core offences comitted.

if someone takes someone elses image and then claims they made / produced it them selves - then that is ripping. the sig comp here is all about giving credit to the maker but also pride in your own name - so it is good to show off your sig whether you made it or not, but ethically you would say who originally made it and give them full credit. :)
