A young woman police officer has been shot dead and her female colleague seriously wounded during an armed robbery in Bradford city centre.

It is believed both the officers were relatively inexperienced, one of them in the force for only a few months.

The dead officer is believed to have been based at Eccleshill police station, in north Bradford.

Sky's Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said both the women are thought to be in their late teens or early 20s.

The gunmen who shot the officers are still on the run.

The young women were attacked as they responded to a 999 call at a travel agents at about 3.25pm.

An eyewitness said attempts were made to resuscitate the dying officer at the scene.

Several roads in the centre of Bradford have been closed off.

Police say most venues in the city centre will be shut tonight and have urged the public to avoid the area.

At the scene, armed officers are standing guard near to an alleyway close to the office of a taxi company in Morley Street.

Dozens of other officers are patrolling the cordoned-off area and numerous police vehicles are at the scene.

Keith Hellawell, the former chief constable of West Yorkshire police, said: "It is extremely sad.

"These things happen rarely, thankfully, but when they do the whole family of policing throughout the country is in mourning.

"And I think every sensible and honourable human being will recognise the sacrifice police officers make and the potential danger they are in every day that they walk out on the streets."

there going to scumbag popping their ugly head up some place. even in a good family area, they will pop-up in a low crime area.

very sad i hope they get these low lifers who did this. taken a life is never good in the public eye, even if it a police officer or any ones life.

The police woman shot dead in Bradford was killed on her daughter's fourth birthday. Two people have been arrested in connection with the crime.

Sharon Beshenivsky, 38, had three children and two step-children.

The robbers opened fire outside the shop as soon as she and colleague Teresa Milburn, 37, arrived on the scene.

WPc Beshenivsky was hit in the chest. Desperate attempts were made to save her life without success.

WPc Milburn was hit in the shoulder as the three raiders fired a volley of bullets to cover their escape.

She is receiving treatment in hospital under armed guard and police say she has suffered a "difficult night". Her injuries are not life-threatening.

The arrests were made in London at 8.30 this morning.

Police, who said they have their "A team" on the case, issued descriptions of the three men they are hunting.

The first is Asian, aged between 25 and 30, of medium to stocky build with short black hair. He is between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall.

The second is black, in his twenties, of slim build, 6ft tall and was wearing smart, dark clothing.

The third is black and also in his twenties.

A forensic search of the scene is now underway and police said the area would be cordoned off for "as long as it takes".

Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn told Sky News the killers were "self-evidently" dangerous individuals.

The officers had been wearing body armour but the shootings have reopened the debate on whether British police should be armed.

:: Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact the incident room on 01274 373 700.
i hope they catch these dickheads..
