May change my college major..
 

Thinking about it alot recently.. I enjoy programming but I don't know if I want to do it for the rest of my life. I think i'd rather just do it in my free time like I do now.. Something about sitting in front of a computer for hours on end everyday, for the rest of my life writing code just doesn’t appeal to me anymore.. The real enjoyment of programming for me comes from creating things for myself and others, not for a corporation..

I'm thinking of going into networking and systems support specialist for windows/Linux.. I have a knack for that kind of stuff.. In one of our computer classes I created a 5pc p2p network in less then 10 minutes with shared folders etc, whereas everyone else was still reading the second page of there how to and setting up there switch.. Yet I just looked at a few pictures and had no real prior experience with networking.. That's was just the basics of networking but I caught on real quick, and it was very interesting.. I also really enjoyed networking my 3 computers at home together to share resources.. Securing it and troubleshooting are enjoyable although I wanted to throw my laptop off the balcony for a while.

I love to build computers. I love playing with hardware! Most of the time I build them for free, as long as someone pays for the parts. I built 8 pc's this year so far and I loved every minute of it, from picking out the parts to piecing it together. I can't get enough. If I ever get married that's going to be a problem tho cause I make a huge mess in the process hehe.. I practically rip open the packages I get from newegg..

looks like it might be a good idea to switch by the sound of it. i'm a more hands-on person that's why i went with hardware, there is a bit more freedom IMHO, and you're not chained to a desk 9-5. that's the way i see it, but obviously it's different for everyone.

but if you're having doubts, it is a good idea to change sooner rather than later.

Yeah, it'd be wise to change from programming. I've heard they have the highest suicide rate. :P :eek:

i heard getting a job as a a software engineer was hard as hell ... i didn't know that many people liked sitting in front of a computer all day writting code .. but anywho lol

i was personally thinking of becoming a computer engineer ... but i'm not sure yet..

Well, im not quite there (in college) yet.
But i had the same change of thought as you, i wanted to go for a Computer Science degree, and then it came to mind i'd be on a computer all day and i don't want to do that all my life like my dad has.

I decided i'm going to go for Business Administration, Major in Accounting and Minor in Information Systems. That way i do somewhat computer stuff but have the accounting part that is another interest of mine.

when i first left school at 16 i thought i'd want to get into web design and computer programming, which is why i started a course for a BTEC national diploma in ICT practitioners (programming route). I dropped out after a year tho however because although i was doing really well, i didnt fancy sitting in front of a computer for years and years creating stuff for bigscale corporations.

Yea ok, i'd be a big successful businessman but i cant do a job i dont enjoy. I love building computers too, built a few for m8s and build my own too.

I have a m8 that did the BTEC national diploma in ICT networking. he passed with really high marks and was actualy given a job by the college themselves as a network support technician. he sets up networks for the various college campases, aswell as building the computers and acting as an adviser over the phones for the general public. he loves it, says he hopes he gets given a longterm contract m8.

from my m8s experience p... i'd advise u to get into it if thats what interests u... seems to be good money in it too =)

If you want to go into networking, CISCO is the way to go. Get certified and make some serious killing, without certification you might as well stick with adding more PCs to your home network ;)

Go for it brother Panther if it's what you enjoy doing then by all means do it and enjoy it:)!!!!

Heh, at least you're still in the IT field. I decided I didn't want to sit in front of a computer for the rest of my life, so I went PoliSci :D

I still mess around with computers, and love nothing more than to stick it to our IT department. I hate those idiots, I'll just put that out there right now.
