railgun rail erosion problem solved?

i was thinking the other day about what i read on a popular science magazine, about the future naval ship and the weapons it would have if they worked all the bugs out, and it hit me about the railgun.
a railgun is a weapon that uses an electromagnetic force to accelerate a projectile down 2 rails used as the contacts and to create the magnetic feild required to accelerate the projectile at many times the speed of sound.
anyway they have been trying to figure out how to prevent rail erosion due to the high current (9000J+)used to create the EMF(ElectroMagneticForce)that propels the projectile, and the projectile trying to weld itself to the rails.
they have experimented with diffrent types of metal to use as the rails and as the projectile but as far as i have heard they still got the same problem.

anyway i was having some tooth pain from a crappy wisdome tooth when it hit me, how does a electric motor prevent the erosion of the comutator it has brushes that ride on it, and was wondering, what if a cup made out of the same material was pushed up over the part of the projectile that rode on the rails?
hmmm, it would cirtainly create the connection required to make the EMF and wouldnt try to weld itself to the rails, is in large abundance and is reletivly in-expencive.

it would be cool if it did work:D

wow mausers a genious!

:D ty

lol you should put your theory to test...railguns...they're in that RedFaction game eh?

Lucky 08-18-2005 09:20 PM

yeah.. red faction pwns :D :D

im gona see if it works, need to get me a 10kv maxwell pulse capacitor to fire it, or get me a large defibulator they got some nice caps in them and even has a charger fer it.

build me a big gun and use an inverter to run the charger and mount it in the back of me 4x4 and blast slowpokes in front of me lol.

Mauser 98K 08-18-2005 10:38 PM

this here is a home built railgun, u can see the cap bank in the green box,its not mine lol, mine is a lot smaller http://www.railgun.org/images/rg_front_2.jpg

Mauser 98K 08-18-2005 10:41 PM

and this is basicly how a railgun works, using lorenze forcehttp://www.powerlabs.org/images/railgun.jpg as the projectile comes in contact with the rails it creates a closed cuircit witch alows electric current to flow thru the rails and thru the armature or projectile,in turn it sets up a electromagnetic field in the rails and another in the armature.

the projectile rides the magnetic field down the rails and out the barrel towards the target, there is also a secondary force caused by expanding plasma caused by the high voltage required to operate the railgun.

on moset of the bigger guns the rail enclosure must be sturdy and beable to withstand a lot of pressure or it will blow apart due to the exsesive EMP and the plasma pressure

very cool Mauser!

Grenademan 08-18-2005 11:57 PM

Yes...back in the days of Red Faction...

Damn that railgun looks cool. I seen a photo somewheres of a railgun firing...I think it was www.securityarms.com or something...

Great idea Mauser:)!!!!

Warm Regards Bro :) :)

man they going to make it real ok.

it was use in a playstation game.

Metal gear solid: Snake

the railgun was mounted on a walking tank call: metalgear, basic solid snake had to take it out. there was a lot of fighting not to easy to win but hell of good fun.

the story line gone into details how the railgun work too.

Grenademan 08-21-2005 08:02 PM

which metal gear? Must be the first one, Ive played and conquered the others, each with an amazing storyline...you know the second one where that nerdy dude's sister gets killed? Made me cry...ahem...There are reasons...lmao because it reminded me of me and my sister. Not that she's dead and all...

Ive just added mouser to my "Dont get on the wrong side of" list. :)

Nice work, let us know how it goes...

that something to see.

i don't know what type of metal they have to use going that fast i think it has to be really harden metal to not to melt at high speed.

but it would be something a spaceship would have in the furture time. lol

it would be something to transfer a nuke to a target. hit it right on the money without it being seen at all. no heat tail or anything at all. a small package big as a suit case that has 20 warheads in it at lease drop above ground level 20.000ft to sparid over a area would blanket 300miles area on the ground.

US-Postal services going to mail drop a ton of mail to a location in 50ft area lol

Grenademan 08-22-2005 06:53 PM

thats the picture I saw last time...yeeeeees
