Must Have Fixed Today!

guys no time to lose..

my bro's office got a virus and it spread to his laptop.. this thing is bad.. it appears to have messed up the kernel...

windows start logo comes on and then a few sec later it goes to blue screen of death not even long enough to read it...

HE MUST HAVE THIS LAPTOP RUNNING TODAY.

any ideas PLEASE post!!!

safe mode.. it starts to load and stops at some kind of agp file and then goes to blue screen..

latest config that worked doesnt work either

Scott 08-16-2005 05:40 PM

put the ms windows cd in and re-install windows. If you do not choose to format the drive all the programs and files he had on there will be left on there so you don't loose important information. Some programs might not work untill they are re-installed but the files will be there.

ok i got in windows but it took like 30 min to load it and still loading... i looked in the processes and there is nothing using allot of cpu or memory..

any ideas?

Lucky 08-16-2005 09:54 PM

is there somthing THAT important that he cant keep? he should of maken montly backups. otherwize, you can try to just move the important stuff to a cd

General Nuisance 08-17-2005 12:20 AM

ok.. yes it was very important there are/was 100's of contacts and forms ect.. ( months of realtor stuff) i know he should have made backups and if he would let me update it this might not have happened.. i told him so but he wont listen.. he says "why fix something that isnt broken".. any who's

what happened is:

his office got a bad virus and it spread to every ones pc.. it made his pc slow down allot (by keeping hd busy) and so he ran a anti virus scan and when he did the laptop shutoff.. (also the load on the hd fried it) so he didn't know what to do and came home and told me to fix it (i say i told u so)

so i looked at it and what happened is the virus kep his hd busy and (apparently his hd was on its way out anyway) and it caused it to start messing up..

i got a smart disk warning and it got even slower and then the system files where lost so it was toast..

i checked and the MBR (or master boot record) was also toast so the file system was gone....

anyways the good part..

I told icishoot about it on msn and he told me to use the knoppix linux live cd to boot it and access the files that way.. well surprisingly it worked wonderfully and i was able to save all of his stuff :)

Thank You IcIshoot!

now should i tell him i saved his files or should i let him think they all gone?

it would teach him a lesson (if he hasn't learned one already) if i dont tell him... :)

hmm...

Drop the files to a CD and offer to sell it to him....

Jeff 08-17-2005 06:57 AM

General Nuisance 08-17-2005 10:14 AM

Stu 08-17-2005 11:23 AM

lmao mike ... heh, lucky then mate, maybe you should just move to linux ;)

Hellfighter 08-17-2005 12:12 PM

download this and run it, DL Link: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_cleaner.html

you can put it on a floppy or a cd then have him run it in safemod, windows should still work in safemod (i hope)

copy and past it in C:\ (HHD) then run it.

if there a virus or in this case a worm it will see it and remove it totally.

I mentioned to steve awhile back when one of his hard drives crashed to put it in the freezer or something (I cant remember right now)? I don't remember if it worked to get his data off the drive before he threw it?

Steve?

Lakie 09-11-2005 02:18 AM

iirc steve plugged in the HD the next day and it worked, never tried the freezer..

But yeah, just make sure that you put it into a freezer back and get all the air out of it to prevent screwing it up by condensation.

What freezing it does is cools down the compnents (which is helpfull if its an overheating part) and contracts some piece of metal which enables the disk to run sommthly or something like that..
