The Surprising One Best Drink For Kids

The Surprising One Best Drink For Kids

If you want your children to be healthy and strong, give them water to drink. Skip juice and milk, both of which can make them fat. A new study from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard University in Boston warns parents that kids who drink the most milk--especially skim milk--are the fattest.

Reuters reports that the three-year survey of 12,829 children aged 9 to 14 showed that those who drank more milk weighed more than those who drank less milk. "Children who drank the most milk gained more weight, but the added calories appeared responsible," the Harvard team wrote in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine in which the study findings were published. "Children who drank more than 3 servings a day of milk gained more in BMI than those who drank smaller amounts." BMI is a reference to body mass index, a ratio of height and weight to determine if one is of normal weight.

Surprisingly, the real culprits when it comes to weight gain are skim milk and 1 percent milk. Why? Study leader biostatistician Catherine Berkey suspects that kids are allowed to drink these two more freely than they are whole milk, which is known to have more calories. "The take-home message is that children should not be drinking milk as a means of losing weight or trying to control weight," Berkey said.

So what can you give your kids to drink? Water. "The basic beverage should be water," Dr. Walter Willett, who worked on the study, told Reuters. "We know that in many parts of the world, kids don't drink any milk at all and they end up with healthy bones." He said kids can get needed calcium from green, leafy vegetables, such as broccoli.

Yes, but milk provides a ton of calcium...which helps build strong bones.

I have only broken 2 bones, a finger and a toe. I am not fat and I drank 2% since I was like ummm young...

What's to blame:
1. Their Parents for letting them sit around and do nothing.
2. Genetics.

i think very few ppl have a genetic weight disability, but it does genuinely exist IMO, i do watch some proper things on TV sometimes :D

i also know very very few fat ppl who exercise especially young ppl.

i used to train 5 days a week, and i could eat anyting i wanted as often as i wanted. i stopped exerciseing and put weight on. it aint rocket science IMO

i think parents should make their kids join a sports club of some kind when they are very young. it has many benefits including health and social, and may even keep kids out of trouble by keeping them occupied.

atholon 06-10-2005 02:42 PM

That is why I put exercise as #1.

What I've noticed, and I could wrong, that kids who live in burbs and open areas are lot more active than kids who live in cities. What do ya guys think?

I totally agree Steve. I'm taking my youngest daughter to the tennis court this summer and to the pool prolly every day. If not that, to the park or she can ride her bike around for exercise. She's a little skinny minnie like I was for so long. Her half sister is lazy and over weight. I feel bad for her because she is 15 now and I know the cool guys aren't interested in her. Their mother is ugly and over weight now so I can't let my baby go without some kind of training. After my divorce my x-wife let her daughter get over weight and she did to. I'm not going to let my baby turn out that way.

i drink 1\2 galon a day, i do have a little belly but that probably comes from eating b4 i go to bed.ive fell off house, fliped a truck 3times at 65mph, crashed me motor cycle at 35mph,fell out of trees, and even hada 357lb guy to fall off blechers on top ov me but never broke a bone, never hada cavity. and if they stop making kids drink milk, they could just fall over or stubb their toe and break all kinds of stuff, not to mention if they fall off their bike. even with the helmet they could break their neck.

atholon 06-10-2005 02:51 PM

:) no one in my family is overweight...except my parents. lol

BADDOG 06-10-2005 05:10 PM

More exercise is definitely the answer to over weight kids, I totally agree with Steve on this one!

Warm Regards

I've been eating whatever I want since I can remeber, and I eat ALOT + I drink alot of milk. I've never broken a bone and was very active in physical sports untill I was about 18. But I exercise.... Kids just need exercise....

I'm also with steve with the genetic stuff.. Some have it, I've seen it, but the majority just use it as something to blame it on. My whole family is a lil chubby.. Why didn't I get that 'gene'?

Hellfighter 06-10-2005 10:10 PM

all nature milk is way better, then paster milk the fat is not broken down then.
