New layout & i need some advice..

im making a new layout for my personal site, but when it came to the navagation part, i dont if i should put buttons or just text or something esle? wot do you think would suit?

so plastic buttons 4 nav,
plastic & image for background for links?

no they are just seperate ideas, saves me making 4 or 5 images
