New PC

So guys...
XFX has decided to replace my card with a 9800GT since they don't have any more of my model in stock. Problems is, is the fact that it is PCI-E and I don't have a mobo to support it.. so I was thinking of getting the cheapest system possible for it:

i don't think Windows will ever support 16gb of ram, but over all its really sweet MOB

You don't think it will ever support it? I have a feeling you will be proven wrong in the near future.

Nice setup, why not push the boat out though and get a quad core? ;)

It's a nice PC but I think you should opt for a Phenom instead

Steve 05-01-2009 11:50 AM

^ you mean Intel :)

.Simon. 05-01-2009 12:32 PM

Hah thats my next dilema. Making the step to quad core, but im considering switching to Intel ;P

Steve 05-01-2009 12:34 PM

i7 owns, but is still very expensive :/

.Simon. 05-01-2009 12:35 PM

+ mobo

Yeah my goal is to try and keep the price as low as possible and still have a decent system. I decided on AMD mainly because they are so cheap.

This is more for my family but I want to be able to play some higher end games on it too.

Scott 05-01-2009 03:09 PM

I would go with AMD if your looking to save money... The AM2 platform is pretty nice and it's said that they are going to stick with it for awhile so future upgrades will be easier.

Sounds good.

Whoop got those parts today, now I get to install when I get home :)

atholon 05-14-2009 01:43 PM

Grr, I can't get XP's setup to load. I just get a bluescreen when it says "starting windows". My friend said that it was due to the ATA speed and that I either need to turn it down during the install or try an SP2 disk.

I tried a windows CD I made that has Sp3 on it but now I can't get the bloody audio drivers to work, it also shows "unknown PCI device" when there are no PCI devices installed. Gigabyte's drivers are a joke?

Steve 05-14-2009 02:07 PM

not sure why the mobo drivers wouldn;t work. i dont have a gigabyte driver cd i just downloaded their drivers of the website last time i tried. but you can be certain they would install of the supplied cd. my asus boards and intel board have driver cd's that go off and install all the drivers by itself.

what is the motherboard model? link would be better, there might be a zip install rather than an exe which is sometimes easier to figure out if you have the right driver or not.

the unknown pci device could be something else not installing other than the sound, but these do not mean it's related to a physical pci card.

Steve 05-14-2009 02:10 PM

*idiot*

has now read the above post with the mobo model in it :D

Steve 05-14-2009 02:21 PM

well i dontloaded the driver but not sure i can help now hmpf, it's a self extracting file but you still need to run the setup.exe by the look of it. if i were you i would grab the one off the website and try that again. sry for the useless info :/

atholon 05-14-2009 02:26 PM

This is the model: Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L

atholon 05-14-2009 02:28 PM

I tried their drivers but it didn't seem to fix anything. :(

Might have something to do with the XP image I made...
I am kind of disappointed in the 9800GT's performance in windows 7. I hope it was just due to the VM.

Steve 05-14-2009 02:40 PM

so this is problems running in the xp vm in win7??
