Hurrah for the British Government!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3912283.stm

Anyone here going to be affected by this nonesense?

Essentially they want to spend more on hi-tech stuff so men and women on the ground have to go to the dole office.

This is the same Govt that took delivery of some Apache gunships 2 years before anyone in Britains was trained to fly them.
This is the same Govt that invaded Iraq based on its unfounded piss poor intelligence.
This is the same Govt that is now seeing just how many troops it requires to keep their head above water in a modern occupation.
This is NOT a govt who should be allowed to take on this burden of modernisation.
Retards.

Oh well. Lets spend all our money on liberating foriegners than put 20,000 men and women out of work. I hope their children and spouses have enough spare cash to survive when their honoured family breadwinners are scrapped.

u forgot to add the incidemnt with the chinooks.. lol they couldnt fly in bad weather, imagin removing near 20,000 troops at the time of a conflict?

Complete stupidity..

squeek !

Anyone remember the nimrod ?
The air force got tired of waiting for it, so they bought the AWACS.

After being in service for 10 years the army might finally have a version of the SA80 which does not jam. (fingers crossed)
:ak47:

The army was also given a new APC, unfortunately the rear door could not be opened if parked on a slope.
:wall:
They had to fit hydraulics to get it to open.

It might help if they spent less on cutting edge technology and more on the basic necessities.
Like boots which do not melt, sleeping bags which don't weigh a tone and body armour for all of the soldiers.

We still have the best fighting forces in the world though. :D

Lakie 07-21-2004 09:44 PM

yeah bb but its not as if the newer american guns arent without problems, take a look at the m4 in afghanistan...

It must be a colonial thing, australia has totally screwed up with defence recently

Our collins class submarines arent quiet and are useless
We buy 25 year old rusted american tanks that dont work in the desert
We buy helicopters that can either have extended fuel tanks or missiles bu not both, so they can either get to the battle with no firepower or not get to the battle with the best arms in the world

no need to be sarcastic. The british government are also scrapping the SBS and recruting more for the SAS Boat troop.

BADDOG 07-23-2004 08:42 AM

All governments make stupid decisions and this one is no better or worse that any other government we've had over the last 30 years or so. Thatcher was warned about a possible invasion of the Falklands but arrogantly chose to ignore it. Her government sent out redundancy notices to troops serving in Sarajevo whilst they were attempting to keep the peace.

What ever the intelligence was regarding Iraq, both the U.K. and U.S. were right to go in and depose that bastard Saddam Hussain. Sooner or later he would have attempted to acquire weapons of mass destruction so the decision to remove him was the right one. Remember this son of a bitch used chemical weapons on innocent people who opposed him.

We all have a choice, higher taxes to pay for more equipment, more troops, aircraft and ships or some one some where has to make a decision about how we spend the taxes raised at present. We can't have it both ways, we either spend a lot more on defense and cut back some where else, health, education, welfare, or we allow the people who govern us to raise tax and fund more defense expenditure that way.

I doubt very much that anyone in the U.K. or any where else for that matter would be willing to vote for any political party that promised to raise taxes!

Every new weapon sytem has teething troubles, some never work properly at all but we have to equip our troops with the very best there is available to do their job so it's back to that choice, more tax or less tax and fewer troops and weapons.

yeah i saw the UK body Armour and the Kevlar plate is barely bigger then 10 x 10 centimeters. I got a pic of a UK bloke with my Body Armour on, we got a huge piece of body armour. ( Royal Dutch Army)

Its a cool vest to get around yer body easy to use, but bigger plates are necessairy.

-Tigger- 08-17-2004 05:00 PM

During the war a tank crewman was ordered to give his armor up to a higher ranked soldier, i think the crewman died during the week to follow, it happened near the start of the war
