Trying Windows 7 RC Today

So I just downloaded Windows 7 RC and I'm looking forward to trying it out. I've only tested it a few times so far today and right now Im back in Vista but gonna head back and so some serious looking around. I'll post screenies and such when I get a few moments...

Anyone else trying it out??

I got an email but kind of ignored it. Whats the difference? is it just an updated beta?

Erik 05-05-2009 09:29 AM

Basically for the most part...yes (wordy). More stable and this (hopefully) will be the last release till it hit's the stores. Overall feel is good. Really fast loading and going to the control panel or the uninstall programs is a hell of a lot faster than vista. Boot time is pretty dang fast.

I don't think it will be. I bet they will do an RC 2 since it isn't due until the end of 09 or early 2010

Scott 05-05-2009 02:48 PM

This RC is good for a year too.. after I finish moving this week I will be putting it on both my PC's... Windows 7 is awesome from what i've seen and used so far

atholon 05-05-2009 03:16 PM

Yeah it starts to log you off every two hours after march 2010 though.

Erik 05-06-2009 04:36 PM

Yeah...my server is down at the moment but I'll upload pics. So far it's been stable. I've had a few issues with IE8 and not loading tabs and half loading tabs. For some reason it wouldn't take my key so I had to go with entering. It's fine for me beause I'll go back into Vista by June or so anyways. So far A+ on this.

Scott 05-09-2009 04:58 PM

I've put the RC on both my laptop and pc and it's very snappy, even faster than XP. The install took literally 10 minutes on both computers and everything, EVERY SINGLE device I have worked out of the box. Boot up and shut down times have been greatly reduced and all my programs installed and work great except Photoshop, which works when I switch it to WinXP compatibility mode.

The only issue I have is that on my desktop, when resuming from standby I sometimes get a BSOD. Not sure what the problem is yet, but I hope they resolve it.

The taskbar is hard to get used to but I see how convenient it could be once I get used to it.

So far I’m really looking forward to this release.

As am I. I haven't experienced your issue Scott the only issue I have so far is IE8 in Windows 7. Sometimes clicking on opening a tab doesn't do jack squat.

:(

I hear some Core2Quad's don't support the VM compatibility mode for 7

Scott 05-11-2009 01:02 PM

That's why that AMD would have been a good choice ;)

The majority of home users will never need the XP VM mode anyways. It's focused towards business customers with legacy applications...

There is still the option of compatibility mode like in all other versions of Windows.. In fact I have to use it for PS3 to run properly.

atholon 05-11-2009 01:58 PM

Hmm I am still debating.

I am torn between a .30 Ghz Core2Duo and the 2.66 Core2Quad the duo is $160 something and the Quad is $184 but the quad doesn't support that while the duo does.

Erik 05-11-2009 04:45 PM

I run a quad and I have no issues doing anything in old programs. Im not buying a new office suite for 7. 2007 works fine for me. Older games like DFTFD works good too.

atholon 05-11-2009 05:34 PM

Just went with the 2.8 Ghz Core2Duo... that will work fine enough for now, I can always upgrade when Core2Quads are cheaper.

Is anyone still using Windows 7? I was planning on reformatting vista today to clear a load of crap i don't use but ive decided to download the x64 version of 7 RC instead.

Steve 07-17-2009 12:29 PM

it is becomming very widely used!

you can pre order home premium for £50 :)

.Simon. 07-17-2009 12:37 PM

Yeah i got that email the other day ;P

Unlike Vista, i haven't heard any bad things from people who have tried it out. I liked it when i tried the first beta.

Steve 08-22-2009 07:55 AM

not tried 7 yet myelf and dont really intend to, but i am looking to order win7 seeing as it's so cheap.

am i right in thinking that the only thing home premium is missing is the XP VM which is pretty much useless for me and also lacks domain capabilities?

Scott 08-22-2009 11:52 AM

It also lacks remote desktop. That's the sole reason why I have to get Pro :(. Unless someone makes rdp available in the home version like they did for Vista.

A good site for comparison:

Scott 08-22-2009 12:12 PM

Hmmn. After looking around a bit it seems like the Home version does in fact have the remote desktop client. From what I read the only limitation wit rdp is the home version cannot act as a host.
