This is just a logo I've been doing for a band of my friend's, Floodgate - soft rock-type band. :)

I went through a couple of versions and me and the dude's band (who is one of the school teachers lol) thought this would be the best idea. Originally I was gonna do an actual gate but then I felt uncomfortable ripping an image from the net (as this is pretty much a commerical band, and I'm too n00b to do a vector in PS), and later on I settled for a water effect in the background which turned out to be quite cool. :)

Trying to aim for simple + effective. I don't want to make any big changes but all input will be accepted.

Lighter colors for the water loook maybe? There isn't much contrast so on a darker monitor that would be hard to see.

Definitely! And skip the FG text, it really doesn't explain anything more than the logo-graphics does on itself and it is therefore quite pointless, and in my opinion it's not very sexy either... Other than that, I think it's a pretty decent logo.

I decided however the square didn't quite cut it well so I instead used a circle. It's kinda reminding me of Pepsi lol but I like how this one turned out:

Don't worry if the edges look a bit jaggy, I took the screenshot at half percentage (the actual size is much much bigger).

Also thinking of maybe adding an outline of NZ in the circle background. :D

That's a big improvement! All though personally I prefer the square over the circle. There's something with the contrast between the 'hard' square shape and the softer wave shape that I think is interesting.

When I can I might actually put an outline of NZ in the background, I reckon that would rock. :)
