lighting effects

hey guys, do you know of a way i could make lighting effects... not lighting effects like you can render in ps7, but like light is shining through something and you can see the light.... if you understand what i mean

i was thinking maybe i could mess around with the dodge tool... but im not sure if that will give me the effect i want

use your layer properties with whatever software you have...
