Hdr

Anyone hear of this? It is pretty sweet. I need to learn how to do it. Here's a sample from someone else: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=396...990577&pid=135

Luckz 10-07-2008 12:10 AM

those are called photographs, and there's this little shutter box called a camera that takes stilled "Pictures" of these things and allows you to save them

~MOUSE~ 10-07-2008 05:35 AM

This seams to explain it quite well http://backingwinds.blogspot.com/200...dr-images.html

atholon 10-07-2008 09:28 AM

HDR is a bit more complicated than that Luckz, look it up on Wiki.

Some of the images are freaking sweet though! Thanks for the link Mouse.
It would be cool if they made an HDR mode for cameras.

atholon 10-07-2008 09:32 AM

Sorry I didn't know that they changed the link.

You do have a HDR mode on every camera that allows you to set the exposure time. Basically you take a photo where you overexpose the highlights but which gives you detail in the shadows, take another for the mid-range and one which gives you detail in the highlights.. You combine these into one image that gives you detail in all areas. That's really all there is to it.. And it's really nothing new or fantastic.

Personally I think most HDR shots look rather silly, but that's me.

Steve 10-07-2008 12:08 PM

not sure what luckz is on about lol but the images i'm seeing from the original post seem to have little or very subtle HDR?? :/

HDR is great if done properly, i really like HDR images :)

some ones i like:

That's what I am talking about, that rocks!!!!

I am a noob when it comes to digital cameras, but is there one that lets you take those series of snap shoots with different exposures?

I mean when you press the button to take the photo it takes like four different photos with different exposures? I am not sure what that is called.

I would very much like to learn HDR

Steve 10-07-2008 02:06 PM

to get the best from it you need a camera that does Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB), any dslr camera can do it.

with the basic canon dslr cameras you get to choose exposure variation from +/-2 (where 0 is 'normal' exposure). one you tell it to use AEB and have set you exposure choices - you want one under exposed, one over exposed and one normal. then you take 3 pics and then you combine the pics on your comp later on.

i'm pretty sure better cameras can do 7 or 9 exposures or maybe more :)

i guess an alternative is to take 3 or more pics on a tripod if you didnt have AEB, but u need to be quick and not move the camera at all.

check out photomatix from: http://www.hdrsoft.com/
u can use their software or their photoshop plugin to make great hdr

this app is not bad either, check out the vids on the site: http://www.mediachance.com/hdri/index.html
it will do some kind of hdr effects on ONE jpeg image! not brilliant but you can get some nice effects.

RAW format is better to :) (rather than jpeg)

~MOUSE~ 10-07-2008 02:06 PM

Could you create the same effect from a normal photograph, just using Photoshop?

If you create 2 new images with the exposures adjusted with the program and combine them in the same way as the guide instructs, could you create a similar effect ?

Steve 10-07-2008 02:12 PM

kind of, cs2 and 3 does have hdr capabilities:

file > automate > merge to hdr

also Bridge can to it:

tools > photoshop > merge to hdr

high dynamic range

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI) is a set of techniques that allows a greater dynamic range of exposures (the range of values between light and dark areas) than normal digital imaging techniques. The intention of HDRI is to accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to shadows.

High Dynamic Range Imaging was originally developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Charles Wyckoff. Wyckoff's detailed pictures of nuclear explosions appeared on the cover of Life magazine in the mid 1940s. The process of tone mapping together with bracketed exposures of normal digital images, giving the end result a high, often exaggerated dynamic range, was first reported in 1993[1], and resulted in a mathematical theory of differently exposed pictures of the same subject matter that was published in 1995[2]. In 1997 this technique of combining several differently exposed images to produce a single HDR image was presented to the computer graphics community by Paul Debevec.

This method was developed to produce a high dynamic range image from a set of photographs taken with a range of exposures. With the rising popularity of digital cameras and easy-to-use desktop software, the term HDR is now popularly used[3] to refer to this process. This composite technique is different from (and may be of lesser or greater quality than) the production of an image from a single exposure of a sensor that has a native high dynamic range. Tone mapping is also used to display HDR images on devices with a low native dynamic range, such as a computer screen.

...correction:

hdr looks like videa game graphics.

:]

Good lookin' pics.

HDR's pretty sweet. See it a lot in video games. :)

I love how the color is so vivid. It is better than the bleached look of regular photos.
