Heard that storm was being called "Frankenstorm" , also being called "the Perfect Storm".

Some states even calling for a state of emergency ahead of the storm.

We're seeing some of the clouds here from SANDY. Could get alittle hairy Northward.

Batten down the hatches !

Hopefully it doesn't cause too much damage.

Gee guys...stay low, that storm is gonna throw stuff around big time. Every one of us, all of us, we are all praying for you at my home here in Australia. I've told every one about it and it's on all the News reports here.
PLEASE-Check in on this post after it's all over so we know you're OK.
Good luck.....

Our local weather reports are for colder temps and an earlier than expected snowfall in the higher elevations. We're in for Rain & very cold nights the next few days.

However, New York is the point that both Sandy & the cold front meet. The mayor of New York predicts heavy flooding in the streets & subways.

Changed to winter tires today, had to buy new and this time I went with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7.

My Finnish blood is boiling in anticipation of some Ice to test them out! :D

Annoyingly there ware icy roads a few days ago when I still had summer tires but not now when I want to test my new winter tires! So annoying! :(

They look like this if you disregard the rim :p

Sucky things about winter tires is they wear out really fast.

True that! My old tires didn't have any studs left :(

Guest001 11-15-2012 11:43 AM

Why do tires have to be made of rubber for Snow or Ice? There would surely be some more durable and grippy solution and surely you don't need or want squishy-ness anymore, for a while at least.

I know this seems like a dumb question but really? Do they?

SilentTrigger 11-15-2012 01:50 PM

Not sure what else (mind you I'm tired) material that would be soft enough to give a smooth ride on 2 - 3 inch thick uneven ice. The squishy character is annoying on asphalt in higher temps (above freezing) but the lover the temp the harder they get. And on asphalt the studs are generly more annoying then the squishy character ;)

No really this is a good question Stomp.

Around here they're called snow tread. You can buy tires with steel reinforced studs.

The tires have steel spikes inbedded in the rubber that grip the snow. The tips are pointed to grip the snow and ice.

I never bought them because they're seasonal, and they're very loud on the open road.

Guest001 11-15-2012 07:25 PM

I don't think the studs do much at all. Do you? I think It's a bit of a stop-gap because they are not thinking outside the square (tires Rubber tires rubber tires ) and looking at the problem with a fresh approach, they just want to keep selling rubber, keep using their old machines to make the same old inferior product. They blow up for chrikes sake! When will we learn?

dave61 11-16-2012 05:45 AM

I can't say how good they worked cause I never used them. We don't really get enough snow here to justify buying them.

But you could always tell when someone had them on their car. They had a definate loud roar when they went down the road.
