Good for you that you're continuing...

Even an expert coder would still need to familiarize themselves with the quirks of the MEd and it doesn't take 5 minutes so it's no shame either.

Be patient and stick with it, don't worry about things moving slowly, maps can easily take months to complete. Victory is sweet.

Worry about what you can do, not what you can't, do what you know to the best of your ability - avoid laxness, continually review the situation.

Work things out on paper first if you can - rubbing out is easier than searching and deleting etc.

Memorize a hierarchy and stick to it.

Here's How I Try To Organize The MEd Events

Inits - Pre-mission events & AI assignments etc
Local Variables - Supports repetitious & complex game elements
Lead-Up Events - Infil - Load Out - Orientation
Main Game Events - Main Elements
End Game Events - Final scenario
Sub Goal Triggers - Keyed to lead-up, main and end game events
Win/Lose Conditions - Keyed to sub goals
Game Over Conditions - Linked to Win/Lose result

I think you'll find the figures above in slight error...

They equate to:
(over) 62 Million files
(more than) 804,000,000,000,000 bytes
