I haven't read anything on 8 cores, except for future Intel/amd processors and comparing 4 core.
yes AMD had some problems with their initial 4 core and put out a 3 core(called Tri-Core). highly generic and was/is dead because of Intel. also there 45nm architecture is not yet available(stuck at 65 nm) and wont be until mid next year, around the time Intel's will be available as a generic processor for the masses and not an extreme version. considering last month Intel started selling a 45 nm processor.........AMD is a bit behind.
Also AMD has been dealing with major losses, and trying to pay for their R&D. not a good mix really when they lost their head architect this year.
AMD had the headway for a few years, but with the core2duo and quadcores from intel beating them to the gate nearly 1.5 years ahead realy hurt AMD and set there future for a game of catch-up. lets hope AMD survives and brings about a processor line that makes Intel look slow like it was in the past when a P4/PD was the best Intel.
