Trying to bridge two Linksys routers - Any takers?

OK here's what I'm trying to do.

1. Linksys Router G with Superboost (G)

2. Linksys Router B (B)

Both are 2.4Ghz

I've them run on and off in the following configuration:

DSL->Modem -> G -> B

I've plugged B into G's local port, i.e. not using B's WAN port at all.

I want to do the following:

1. Use 2 ports on G for VOIP and my work laptop -- this leave 1 empty since 1 taken by B.

2. Use all 3 remaining ports of B. 2 for wire and 1 for wireless access.

I've managed to do that but G keep coming down and B takes over the network.

What's I've tried:

1. Turned off DHCP Server of B but then I was not able to use the wireless part of it.

2. Assigned Static IP but for some reason G didn't like it and won't let B be used.

Any ideas? I'm getting tired of rebooting the routers...:*(

sounds like a fun problem :D

seems difficult to figure out as both will need to be DHCP to give IP's for wireless i think but that will mess things up. i take it you can choose the IP ranges that it assigns by DHCP, can you make sure the ranges don't overlap and try that?

i'm not sure if one device would take control or they would contine to fight all the time. (had a job the other day where a DHCP router was being overuled by a 2003 server's DHCP but that's different i guess).

if it's winding you up and not working, go buy a $30 switch and use that instead of a 2nd router. :D

Have you tried setting 2 different Network IP's?

Say the G has the 10.0.0.x Network pool and the B has the 192.168.x.x pool .

That might work, since B is ony requesting a IP from G to be able to communicate.

Thanks guys. Tried everything. I remember the reason I got G was becuase B had issues staying up for more than couple of hours.

I've ordered a 8-port Linksys Workgroup switch. It had rebate on it. :D

if you ever want to get this working let me know ;)

I currently have 2 routers on my network since one of my switches died on me :(

Anyways its not as hard as you would think to get it up and working. You did have the right idea to turning dhcp off in one. You ONLY need 1 dhcp server on the network even if its not the router. All the DHCP server does is provide the ip, subnet, gateway and blah blah... When using the routers you need to make sure to use the dhcp server in the router with the WAN connection unless you can provide the gateway and such that needs to be given out. The gateway needs to be the ip of the router with the WAN connection. Now what you do in the router with dhcp off is give it an static ip address on the SAME network as the other router. Make sure that it is not the same as the other router however.

Basically from the info you provided, you did it all right. Just make sure they have different ip addresses but on the same network.

Nice. Thanks. I might give it another try. The way things are going I might exhaust my 8 ports in a month or so. :D
